Greek Oregano | Premium Mediterranean Herb
940৳
Greek oregano (Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum) is considered the finest oregano in the world — significantly more pungent and aromatic than the Italian or Mexican variety. Grown in the mountains of Greece and the eastern Mediterranean, it is the defining herb of pizza, pasta, Greek salads, grilled meats, and Mediterranean cooking globally.

What is Greek Oregano?
Oregano is one of the most widely used herbs in the world, but Greek oregano stands apart. The subspecies Origanum vulgare hirtum, grown in Greece, Cyprus, and Turkey, contains much higher levels of essential oils (especially carvacrol and thymol) — giving it an intensity, bitterness, and floral pungency that ordinary oregano lacks. It is the herb that makes a Greek salad taste Greek, a Margherita pizza taste authentically Italian, and a grilled lamb chop taste Mediterranean.
Flavour Profile
Intensely aromatic, earthy, slightly bitter, piney, with warm herbaceous notes and a sharp, pungent quality when crushed between fingers. Greek oregano is more robust than the Italian variety — it stands up to high heat, long cooking, and bold flavours without fading.
How to Use?
- Pizza: The non-negotiable pizza herb — scatter generously over any homemade pizza before or after baking
- Pasta Sauce: Add 1 tsp to tomato-based pasta sauce for authentic Mediterranean depth
- Chicken Marinade: Mix with lemon juice, garlic, and olive oil for the classic Greek-style chicken marinade ('pollo alla greca')
- Grilled Meats: Rub onto any meat — works beautifully on lamb, chicken, and beef
- Greek Salad: Essential — toss cucumber, tomato, olive, and feta with olive oil, red wine vinegar, and dried oregano
- Flatbread: Scatter over garlic butter flatbread or paratha before serving
- Egg Dishes: Add to scrambled eggs or omelettes for a herby upgrade
- Dal or Lentil Soup: A pinch of Greek oregano in masoor or mung dal adds a surprisingly elegant Mediterranean note
Suggested Pairings
Tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, lemon, feta cheese, eggplant, lamb, chicken, olives, red wine vinegar. Bangladeshi fusion: Exceptional paired with tomato-onion masala in a hybrid curry-pasta sauce.
Why Bangladesh Loves It
The explosion of pizza culture, Italian restaurants, and home baking in Dhaka, Chittagong, and Sylhet has made Greek oregano a kitchen staple. It is the herb that makes homemade pizza taste like a real pizzeria — and nothing else can substitute it.
Greek vs Regular Oregano
Regular oregano: Mild, slightly sweet, less pungent. Greek oregano: 2-3x more aromatic, intensely herbal, more bitter — the flavour difference is immediately noticeable. If you have only ever used regular oregano from supermarket blends, Greek oregano will be a revelation.
Storage & Shelf Life
Store in a sealed glass jar away from light and heat. Shelf life: 2–3 years, though best within 18 months for peak aroma.
